The first three 10-Ton Steam cranes were imported and put into service during the financial year to 31 March 1938 at a cost of £14,782. It was noted that "work was proceeding on the construction of two 10-ton cranes for the North Island". The remaining two were recorded as incomplete on 31 March 1939, but were in service by 31 March 1940 at a cost of £11,643. (Source: AJHR D.2).

Working timetables (NI 1947 and SI 1952) note that the 10 tonners were restricted to being run on mixed and goods trains at the working timetable schedule speeds. No restrictions were listed on lines permitted to be used. The cranes were to be placed in marshal order and were permitted to travel with jib leading or trailing, with a bogie running wagon to be used to carry the jib.
