Background and Restoration Project

The Goodman Battery Electric locomotive was built in Chicago in 1922 for the New Zealand Co-operative Dairy Co railway wagon marshalling at the Frankton dairy factory, Hamilton. The Company’s brochure at the time reports that ‘the locomotive is capable of pulling 100 tons on the level, and does in a few minutes work that formerly occupied two horses one day.’ The locomotive was continuously used at the dairy factory until the early 1980s.

In 2002 operating trials, using temporary batteries, we confirmed that the locomotive's electrical and mechanical equipment were in working order. However, the chassis and body have deteriorated, and the locomotive is now under restoration. The objective of the restoration is to operate the loco on public Open Days, carrying passengers. The locomotive cab, which requires replacement, will be redesigned to permit the carriage of up to eight passengers. It is intended that the locomotive will compliment the steam train and motor jigger rides the club already provides. Original Cab Layout of Electric Locomotive
